4:42 pm - Decision
|
As much as I want to work in Denver, I'd be foolish to pass up an almost sure thing by abandoning my department so soon and breaking my commitment to them. I will be with my friends at home, along with my girlfriend all summer and will probably be receiving a lucrative offer at the conclusion of the summer. Thanks for the input, all, and I'll be seeing most if not all of you when I get back at the end of the week. I miss everyone!

1:46 pm - Something postworthy
|
justicegorilla, plans for world domination are back on.
I got an email tuesday after about 4 months (the whole semester) from a person at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver, CO. They want me to work on autonomous systems and rovers for NASA. Man, I really with they had told me that, oh I don't know, 3 months ago. Even 2 would have been great.
After about 3 months with absolutely no response from anyone in Denver, I told Owego (where I worked last summer, about 20 mins from where I live) that I didn't hear back from Denver, so they've got me again for the summer.
I've lived where I am my entire life, and it's really not a very exciting place. People seem to get stuck there their entire lives, unable to escape. It's a decent place to have a family, in my honest opinion, but nowhere you should be as a young adult for more than 2 months at a time.
OK, so now we have the dilemma. I desperately want to go to Denver and work this awesomely cool job where my code will literally be on a rover that is going to the moon. When you see the thing move, that'll be my code. Unfathomable. However, my department was great to me last year, I think they're great people and I would love to work with them again. I've committed to being in Owego since Denver took so long. I don't want to leave my boss holding the bag (not to mention being a bit insulting) by just leaving and not working at Owego at all, but I need to try this Denver thing.
My potential solution is to work the first half of the summer at Owego, bringing a new intern that they got because I submitted his resume (he was a standout in the programming class I TIed last fall) up to speed, and then leave and do the second half of the summer in Denver. I wouldn't get the full intern experience in Denver, but I'd get enough of a taste, I think, to tell if it's right for me or not.
OK, let's kick it up to the 4th dimension. Flash forward to the end of the summer. I want a job offer. Will half a summer in Denver be enough to justify an employment offer? Would it be better just to say "you know, I can just go to Denver later in my career" and work another summer at Owego, virtually cementing a job offer? I know what I want to do, but does it make "business sense" to do it?
My parents want me to go. My girlfriend wants me to go. I want to go. But I'm so grateful for the opportunities I have here and now, do I really want to risk messing that up?

Note: it has come to my attention that this guy draws a crappy web comic. I do not endorse or encourage the reading of these emo stick figure pictoralizations.

8:07 pm - Weekend of fun
|
Well, we didn't end up doing pirates-- we ended up at a party at a friend of a friend's place. Bonfire and beverages were there, and I had a good time. Ended up staying over at Chris' place and spent most of Sunday hanging with him and mich. After a late lunch, met up with Dave, Cesca, Dave's parents and Jake for a bbq at arnold park. Delicious kielbasa and aerobies everywhere, good times. Then, home for some nice conversations with Katie S and Liz Byrne (amongst others). Tonight: Cybercafe trivia with Sammy sam sam sam and gaming! w00t.

and not the religious one. One of the kids in my co-op coop is moving to the new Presidential Helo building, with another moving a week from yesterday. This will bring it down to 3-- me, Nick and this other local kid Pat. Sometimes Pat can be abrasive, but he's a good worker. I'm gonna miss the other 2, but they said they'll stop by since most meetings they have will be in the old building, anyway. Went home and then Mark and I got chinese for dinner. Talked to Mark's parents about their recent trip to china (cool place!) and then headed over to justicegorilla's for RPing which fell through cause the 3rd player was being a nerd somewhere else. Ah well, postponed to Monday. Ran around binghamton with Evan and Josh, ran into some people I knew at wegmans (2 cashiers I worked with and chaoset). Headed back to Evan's and drove over to Nick's for a party with beverages. I had a bunch of beverages, and made some phone calls. There was supposed to be a big group coming that didn't show, but we all had a good time and it was nice to hang out with everyone. Got home around 4am. Tonight, I'm doing Pirates of the Carribean marathon with Chris and people. w00t.

11:45 pm - My weekend was made of AWESOME.
|
So after my day off due to flooding on Thursday, I worked a half day on Friday and then headed to Philly. The drive down was easy, made it in 3 hours including a little stop and go traffic at the city limits. Erin's apartment was incredible (although, her undergrad was in interior design, so she's cool like that). We went out to the Continental Mid-Town which was awesome. It was asian family-style dining (order food for everyone to share) but with a neat twist-- the food is brought out as soon as it's ready, and you can order as you go. We ordered a few things we wanted, and then they just appeared hot and fresh. When we finished that stuff, we ordered some more. Very casual, very cool. Erin took me for a walk around the neighborhood after, she's really close to a lot of cool stuff.
Saturday, we slept in a little and then headed to IKEA for some furniture (I love that place) and then put it together before heading out to see Superman Returns at an IMAX... that was awesome. I forgot how cool IMAXes are. After the movie, we hit a pub for some dinner and a burger that her former roommate described as "bangin'" (which she hated). But it was really good. Headed back and bummed around getting ready for the Infected Mushroom/Bad Boy Bill performance that had spawned this trip. Got into Shampoo around 11:30, headed upstairs to the main dance floor where someone I didn't care about was performing. So I wandered off to a side floor and found a pretty cool hip hop/electronic group making some pretty cool music, so I grabbed Erin and we hung out there for a while. Saw some interesting characters, to say the least. Headed back out to the main floor where I could hear the Chicago house beats pouring out of the speakers, I knew Bad Boy Bill had arrived. After grabbing a water at the water bar, I decided to throw caution to the wind and take my n00b dancing to the floor. Lo and behold, I was having an even better time. After a while I noticed people migrating to a different side of the floor. There they were, Infected Mushroom, setting up their gear. I was almost in shock. I moved over and couldn't take my eyes off them. It was extremely exciting. As Bad Boy Bill finished his set, the room was thick with anticipation. I totally let loose and danced until 4am when I was so exhausted I could barely stand. They weren't through, but I just couldn't do it anymore. I was so dehydrated. My ears hadn't hurt that bad since the Godsmack concert I went to a while back. It was incredible, though, and I loved every minute of it. I have lots of video, but the pics didn't come out as well because the place was so smoky.
Slept until the crack of 1:30 on Sunday, then had lunch with Erin and decided it was about time to head off to New Hope to see all my friends there. Arrived around 4, thanks to Jo's Mom's awesome directions. Jo was in the shower, so I met her very cool mom and stepdad. What did Jo want to do after she had just showered? DDR, of course! So off we went, where I sucked quite badly. Jo and Dent did well, though. Brittni showed up and we all headed back to Jo's for showers. After Colin got back from Jersey, and Jason and "Cool Liz" (as I call her) joined us, we all headed to Applebees. Deliciousness ensued, and then we headed to Cool Liz's place for Boondock Saints in her super awesome basement (but not before getting distracted by that old Nickelodeon weird Temple show.... and beverages). After the movie, Jo and I went back to her place and headed for bed.
Monday consisted of getting "Breakfast" at 1pm with Colin and Brittni, then visited Lauren and a very large-handed friend of hers, Liam. New hope pictures can be found in the summer 06 album here. Saw Nacho Libre with Dave and Cesca, which was mindless and I wouldn't really want to see again.
4th of July was tons of fun, went up to Tom Wilson's cabin out in the middle of nowhere and had lotsa fun with Evan, Aaron, Pete, Amy, Big Tom, Dave, Cesca, et cetera. Headed to Sean's house for fun, food, fireworks and f-volleyball (I couldn't ruin the f thing I had going).
Tonight, I played pool with Aaron and watched him give his hedgehog a bath, which was really cute.

11:24 am - Flood
|
|
Dear everyone, I'm ok. The flooding is amazing, I've never seen anything like it. I have pictures of the town square mall (down the street from me) and I might go out at take some of this bridge between vestal and endicott.... the water is at bridge level, which I never believed could happen. My houses are safe, and I'm fine. They closed down Lockheed Martin, mostly I believe due to the fact that most of the highways are flooded. I hope everyone local and anyone else affected by the flood are all right.
This is going to be devastating to the area. Nobody here has flood insurance, and people's houses are being completely destroyed. When all this is over, I encourage everyone to give generously to any sort of relief fund, these people are having their lives ruined right in front of their eyes. Thank you for your concern.

So yeah. I did C# training at work which was really cool when he teacher wasn't going over elementary language independent concepts. Mon and tues, I hung out with justicegorilla, making a character for a game he's gonna be running this summer. Thursday, I went with xxeroxed to get his 2nd chest surface piercing, which was cool. It's gonna look great when it's finished. I got my new car, too. I think I've mentioned it, maybe? If not: 2002 Chevrolet Malibu LS that just hit 11,000 miles, so basically, a brand new 5 year old car. It's silver, really beautiful. I'll take pictures, but it's coming back to school with me so all you PSUers will see it when I come back anyways. I'm getting custom Penn State plates for it, too. <3 Tonight: watching a boxing match with Chris, Nick and Mark. Tomorrow: Father's day stuff with the fam. Monday: Dorney park trip!!! Woo!
